Embryo transfer in competition horses: Managing mares and expectations

چکیده

Embryo transfer (ET) is an accepted and successful technique for obtaining foals from mares without interrupting their competition careers. Recent research, however, suggests that the potential of factors including heat, exercise, repeated embryo flushing and repeated manipulation of the reproductive cycle using exogenous hormones to have a negative impact on fertility may have been underestimated. This paper reviews the evidence base for involvement of these factors in repeated failures to recover embryos from nongeriatric competition mares without obvious clinical or pathological indications of reproductive abnormalities. It concludes that, for some mares at least, a cessation of exercise for the periovulatory period and the period between ovulation and embryo flushing, combined with careful management of flushing-induced endometritis, and minimal hormonal manipulation of the reproductive cycle, may be necessary to optimise embryo recovery rates. Mare owners may have been encouraged to request ET for their mares following high-profile examples in the media of elite mares that have produced foals by ET whilst competing. The veterinarian should educate mare owners about the multiple factors that may affect the chances of recovering an embryo from their mares, and should manage the expectations of mare owners so that they do not approach ET programmes in the expectation that there will be no disruption to their training and competition plans.

New Assisted Reproductive Techniques for Horses

Introduction Although embryo transfer provides a means of obtaining pregnancies from some mares that might not otherwise be capable of producing offspring, some mares cannot provide embryos for transfer. Mares in which embryo transfer may not be successful include those with: 1) failure of ovulation, 2) chronic endometritis (uterine inflammation), or 3) anatomical problems (e.g., cervical adhes...

Impact of moderate exercise on ovarian blood flow and early embryonic outcomes in mares.

The advent of embryo transfer has allowed horses to continue to train and compete during the breeding season. However, the associated stress of exercise may be detrimental to reproduction. The objectives of this study were to evaluate differing exercise protocols on reproductive blood flow and embryonic outcomes in mares. Light-horse mares were randomized into control (n = 4), partial-exercised...

Comparison of a single dose of moxidectin and a five-day course of fenbendazole to reduce and suppress cyathostomin fecal egg counts in a herd of embryo transfer-recipient mares.

OBJECTIVE To compare larvicidal regimens of fenbendazole and moxidectin for reduction and suppression of cyathostomin fecal egg counts (FEC) in a transient herd of embryo transfer-recipient mares. DESIGN Randomized, complete block, clinical trial. ANIMALS 120 mares from 21 states, residing on 1 farm. PROCEDURES An initial fecal sample was collected from each mare; mares with an FEC ≥ 200 ...

Investigation of seroprevalance of toxoplasmosis in mares and stallions in Ankara province, Turkey

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in mares and stallionsin the province of Ankara. Sera from 168 clinically healthy horses were tested for the presence ofToxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Sabin Feldman dye test. Toxoplasma gondii infection wasdetermined in 62 (36.9%) of 168 horses with the titers ranging from 1:16 to 1:256.

First Evidence of Placental Transfer of Ochratoxin A in Horses

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a renal mycotoxin and transplacental genotoxic carcinogen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the natural occurrence of OTA in equine blood samples and its placental transfer. For the assessment of OTA levels, serum samples were collected from 12 stallions, 7 cycling mares and 17 pregnant mares. OTA was found in 83% of serum samples (median value = 121.4 pg/mL). For the...
